A Journey of Care: Estia Health’s Nurse of the Year

Every day across our Estia Health homes, our dedicated nurses make a profound difference in the lives of our residents.

Our annual Nurse of the Year award shines a light on these everyday heroes, celebrating the exceptional care that defines our nursing community.

As we recognise International Nurses Day this month, we extend our admiration and thanks to every nurse at Estia Health, taking a moment to reflect on the inspiring journeys, dedication and heart that define our profession, and none more so than that of Thidarat, affectionately known as “Bon.”

In the warm, welcoming corridors of Estia Health Glen Waverley, there’s a nurse who brings more than just medical expertise – she brings joy, dedication and a smile to our residents’ faces. Bon, our 2023/24 Nurse of the Year, embodies a journey that many of our talented team can relate to.

Bon's story began in 2016 when she took her first steps into aged care as a Personal Care Assistant. Initially uncertain about her path, she discovered that aged care offered something unique – a combination of purpose and possibilities to make a genuine difference in the lives of those she cares for.

By April 2022, Bon's dedication and hard work led her to become a Registered Nurse and later saw her advance into a leadership role, first taking on the responsibilities of acting Care Director, before her permanent appointment to Care Director in 2025. Yet, ask anyone about Bon, and they won't mention her titles, they'll tell you about her gentle demeanour and commitment to our residents’ wellbeing.

What sets Bon apart is her unique approach to care. She understands that excellence in aged care requires more than clinical expertise, it demands heart, creativity, and genuine connection. Her innovative “five-minute visits” reflect this philosophy. These brief but meaningful interactions, often punctuated with her trademark humour, have become a highlight of residents’ days and a testament to the power of personalised care. It's this consistent dedication that contributed to her earning our highest nursing honour.

"I've had the privilege of watching Bon's remarkable journey unfold," reflects Marguerite, Head of Clinical Development, whose pride for Bon is unmistakable. "Bon embodies person centred care. Dedicating those five minutes to each resident, going that extra step shows the dedication she takes in everything she does. She isn't afraid to ask questions, and learns from every experience, always seeking to improve."

Marguerite particularly admires how Bon's family values shine through in her work. “Whether it's residents feeling at home, family members finding comfort, doctors feeling confident, or team members feeling inspired, Bon creates trust naturally.”

"Now, as Care Director, Bon is exactly where she belongs – inspiring and guiding others," Marguerite shares. "It's an honour to support our nurses' growth, and seeing Bon's tremendous contribution expand from one home to leading others is incredible."

This recognition has reinforced Bon's passion in her chosen path while inspiring her to continue growing both personally and professionally. “I am deeply grateful, honoured and humbled to receive this recognition, which acknowledges my dedication to delivering exceptional care,” Bon shares. She credits this achievement to the supportive environment at Estia Health, through guidance from inspiring leaders, professional development opportunities, and a culture that values both growth and compassion.

"If you can make people laugh and smile from your work, and it brings you even more happiness, then why not continue doing what you love? I look forward to continuing to be a part of the Estia Health team," Bon reflects, "and hopefully inspire others to see what's possible in nursing."

Our Nurse of the Year award is a special honour, one that not only recognises exceptional dedication and impact in nursing but also celebrates the compassion and care that define the very best. As part of this recognition, the recipient receives valuable opportunities for inspiration and professional development.

Marguerite echoes this sentiment: "We’re proud to nurture our nurses' growth, allowing them to further grow and reconnect with what matters.”

From Bon's journey, we see that extraordinary care doesn't emerge from titles or recognition alone, but from the courage to learn, grow, and lead with compassion. As we celebrate Bon's achievement, we also celebrate the potential within each of us to make a profound difference in the lives of our residents.
