Eat. Play. Connect. Belong

We understand the past few months have been a challenging time for most, but particularly for older people living alone in our community or for carers looking after a loved one, needing a break. That’s why we’re currently offering short-term respite care at no cost*, so book in advance or for a last-minute stay.

During your stay you’ll enjoy; meeting new people and warm conversations over fresh, nutritious meals, cooked daily, hobbies you love and the opportunity to try a new activity or two.

What is residential respite care?

Respite care provides the option to access short-term care in a residential aged care home. Respite residents receive 24/7 care, the opportunity to participate in meaningful daily activities, build connections with permanent residents and enjoy freshly cooked, nutritious meals. Often people begin by initially accessing respite care for a week or two, however a number of our homes also offer day respite care. Respite care can be planned in advance, if your carer is planning a trip or has an appointment to attend. It is also available in emergencies.

Why choose residential respite care?

People may require short-term respite care for a number of reasons; it may be an option for someone transitioning from a hospital stay before moving home or into an aged care home permanently. For carers, looking after someone requires an incredible amount of commitment and dedication and there will be a time where you need to take time off for appointments, a holiday, or just a short break to look after yourself. For many, respite care can also be an opportunity to try residential aged care before making the permanent move into a residential aged care home.

What are the fees for residential respite care?

Respite residents are charged a basic daily care fee for each day for the length of the stay. The basic daily care fee is determined by the Australian Government and is set as 85% of a single aged pension and is updated twice a year. There can also be fees for additional services, which we offer in our homes. For more information on residential aged care fees and costs, visit our understanding the costs page.Understand the costs

How do I apply for residential respite care?

To access government supported respite care, you and your carer will need to undergo an ACAT Assessment (or ACAS in Victoria), which is a process to determine the level of care you require.

If you’re eligible for respite care, you can access up to 63 days of subsidised respite care in a financial year, which includes both planned and emergency residential respite care.

How we are managing COVID-19

Our intense focus is the health, safety and wellbeing of our residents and employees and we have made a number of important changes to the way we provide care for our residents in response to COVID-19. We continue to make changes as the situation evolves.
Infection prevention and control is central to mitigating the risk of COVID-19 and at Estia Health this is guided by the latest expert advice. We are continuously monitoring each of our homes, the communities around them, the relevant government guidance, and take additional measures to protect our residents and employees as the need arises.

What should I look for when choosing respite care?

Choosing a care home for respite care is similar to when you’re looking at permanent residential aged care.

Here’s a few things for you to consider when you’re looking at your options:

Is the home in an area you know well or in a place that’s easy for your loved ones, family and friends to visit?

To look at an Estia home near you, click here.

Have you been on a tour of the home to meet the team and to see the home’s environment and activities on offer? Have you seen a sample menu of the daily meals? Do you feel comfortable while in the home and can you imagine yourself staying there? Have you gone with a loved one, family member or friend to get their thoughts? Book a tour today at one of our homes.

Have you met the residents living there and spoken to them and can you imagine yourself socialising and spending time with them?

Have you discussed your care needs with the team and do you feel confident they can provide the care and support you need

Hear from our residents and carers who have benefited from respite care at one of our homes .

  • “I am dedicated to looking after Mum for as long as possible, and having a break allows me to be a better carer for her.”

Shirley, family member Estia Health Golden Grove
  • My grandmother entered Estia Health for Respite care after a fall this year. She felt so comfortable and welcomed that she decided to stay on as a Permanent Resident. Radmila made the transition a positive experience as she guided us through the process with her gorgeous smile and genuine care of the residents. It has given me great peace to be able to approach my grandmother’s room to hear the staff having a laugh with her and genuinely making her feel at ease. She has some favourite staff members that have now become her extended family and I am so grateful to them all.

  • “I wish that I had started respite care for my husband sooner and not waited until it was critical. I know now that when I am well, everyone in my family copes better.”

Linda, family member Estia Health Figtree
